Guilfoyle Faced $100,000 Payment Allegation Before Confirmation
Eric Deters says Kimberly Guilfoyle asked him to pay a $100,000 American Express bill while he sought help with federal tax and extradition matters. Her lawyer disputes the messages and says the money could have concerned travel or speaking expenses.
The allegation became public in October 2026, more than a year after the exchange Deters describes. The Kentucky businessman, former lawyer and Republican candidate says the request came days before Guilfoyle’s July 9, 2025 Senate confirmation hearing for ambassador to Greece. He says he did not pay the $100,000.[1][2]
House Oversight ranking Democrat Robert Garcia requested financial and communications records and asked that relevant records be preserved. His October 8 letter describes a longer financial relationship: Deters reportedly said he had paid Guilfoyle $300,000 over the years and discussed as much as $1 million for help obtaining access to administration officials. Those sums are separate from the alleged unpaid credit-card request.[3]
Tax and extradition matters
Garcia’s letter recounts a June 11 consulting letter referring to $50,000 in back pay and another $50,000 for services until confirmation. It describes an alleged July 3 request to pay American Express directly and messages discouraging written discussion. The letter says Guilfoyle forwarded correspondence to then-IRS Commissioner Billy Long and lobbied the Justice Department for Deters.[3][4]
Deters described his tax dispute as civil in a CNN interview and acknowledged that a consulting-fee label did not accurately describe his proposed payment. He also told ABC that he offered money for help seeking the extradition of an Ohio doctor who had fled to Pakistan.[3][4][1]
Guilfoyle’s response and appointment
Guilfoyle’s attorney challenged the messages’ authenticity and suggested the money could have reimbursed travel or speaking expenses. Deters denied owing her money. The embassy defended her public-service record in its statement to The Wall Street Journal. Garcia sought documents by October 22, 2026.[1][3]
Guilfoyle worked as a prosecutor and television presenter before Trump selected her for the diplomatic post. She was formerly married to Gavin Newsom and later engaged to Donald Trump Jr.; that engagement ended in 2024. The Senate confirmed her September 18, 2025, by 51–47. The alleged request predates confirmation but followed her selection for the office.[5][1][2][6][7]
The federal bribery provisions
(2) being a public official or person selected to be a public official, directly or indirectly, corruptly demands, seeks, receives, accepts, or agrees to receive or accept anything of value personally or for any other person or entity, in return for: (A) being influenced in the performance of any official act;18 U.S.C. § 201(b)(2)(A)[8]
Federal bribery law covers a public official or a person selected to be a public official who corruptly seeks something of value in return for influence over an official act. Deters alleges a personal-debt payment request linked to specific federal assistance. The Supreme Court’s McDonnell decision distinguishes action on a particular governmental matter from arranging a meeting or access.[1][3][8][9]
(1) directly or indirectly, corruptly gives, offers or promises anything of value to any public official or person who has been selected to be a public official, or offers or promises any public official or any person who has been selected to be a public official to give anything of value to any other person or entity, with intent— (A) to influence any official act;18 U.S.C. § 201(b)(1)(A)[8]
The statute separately addresses corrupt offers intended to influence official action. Deters’s own account includes an offer of money for extradition assistance. The receiving-side and offering-side provisions therefore address different parts of the alleged exchange.[1][8]
The wider Trump-family dispute
Deters also says he paid Donald Trump Jr. $200,000 for two appearances and Eric Trump $100,000. In The Hill’s account of his MS NOW interview, he distinguished those speaking fees from his objections to the family’s cryptocurrency ventures and Kushner’s Saudi-backed investment business. He said he would continue supporting Trump’s policies and MAGA candidates while rejecting Trump personally.[2][10]
